Why this exists

The story.

My grandmother used to tell me amazing stories about the woman she once dreamed of becoming, and I thought she was larger than life — a true Mother of Gods. But when I finally followed my own dreams and became who I really was, she rejected that part of me. This song is about loving her, grieving that contradiction, and choosing not to make myself smaller just to fit the version of me she remembered.

Lyrics

The words.

Verse 1
You told me once about the woman
you thought that you might be,
bright lights hanging from the rafters,
crowds screaming victory.
Before you were the Mother of Zeus,
before the family name,
you dreamed of standing in the ring
and making them remember yours.
But somewhere between dreaming
and doing what good girls do,
you traded in the spotlight
for the life they handed you.
A wife.
A mother.
Sunday dinners.
Everything exactly right.
And nobody ever asked you
where that fighter went at night.
Pre-Chorus
Maybe they taught you growing up
that wanting more was wrong.
Maybe you learned survival
meant learning to belong.
But I keep thinking of the woman
you buried underneath—
because when I became myself,
you asked me to bury me.
Chorus
Mother of Zeus,
you spent your whole life
staying in your corner,
doing everything
the way they said you should.
Then I stepped into the ring
and told you who I really was—
and you kept calling me
the name you understood.
You loved the child
who followed your old script.
But if you couldn't love me,
then you didn't love me.
You dreamed your whole life
of becoming something larger—
funny how you made
everyone else stay small.
Verse 2
You buried Grandpa faithfully,
then wore the widow like a vow.
Never reached for something different,
never asked what you wanted now.
No second first kiss.
No reckless evening.
No life that needed no excuse.
You played every part they handed you
until obedience looked like truth.
And maybe you were proud of that.
Maybe discipline became your crown.
Maybe after years of shrinking
you forgot that shrinking hurts.
So when I finally sat before you
and gave you everything that's true,
you nodded—
then the next time that you saw me,
you spoke to someone I outgrew.
Pre-Chorus
I didn't ask you to understand
every road that brought me here.
I only asked you to look at me
and recognize who had appeared.
You wanted significance once.
How could you not understand?
I was doing what you never did—
taking my life
into my own hands.
Chorus
Mother of Zeus,
you spent your whole life
staying in your corner,
doing everything
the way they said you should.
Then I stepped into the ring
and told you who I really was—
and you kept calling me
the name you understood.
You loved the child
who followed your old script.
But if you couldn't love me,
then you didn't love me.
You dreamed your whole life
of becoming something larger—
funny how you made
everyone else stay small.
Bridge
Maybe looking at me
meant seeing the woman
you buried long ago.
Maybe watching Aphrodite
tear her script apart
made the Mother of Zeus wonder
why she never tore up her own.
Maybe my freedom
felt like judgment
on every rule
you surrendered to.
Maybe if you admitted
I could rewrite the story—
you'd have to ask
why you never did too.
But Grandmother...
I couldn't stay your grandson
just so your world stayed still.
I couldn't die inside your memory
to prove that I loved you still.
You dreamed about the wrestling ring.
I finally heard the bell.
I climbed between the ropes myself.
You chose the script.
I chose myself.
Final Chorus
Mother of Zeus,
I wish you'd stepped outside your corner
just once for me.
Because I would've taken your hand
and shown you there was still time
to become whoever
you once dreamed you'd be.
But you chose the child
who wasn't standing there.
And I finally learned
that love must see.
You dreamed your whole life
of becoming something larger—
then asked Aphrodite
to become small
enough to fit your memory.
So I walked away.
Not because I stopped loving you—
but because I finally loved
me.
Outro
Sometimes I picture you
under those arena lights.
Young.
Strong.
Unapologetic.
Before wife.
Before mother.
Before widow.
Before Zeus.
And I wonder
if that woman would've understood me.
I think she might have.
I wish you'd let her live.
