Why this exists

The story.

The 90s was a magical time, but one of the greatest gifts was our first Virtual Worlds, they allowed me to rebuild myself and was always a login button away from limitless creativity that helped define who I became.

Lyrics

The words.

Intro
[Filtered synth, distant modem-like shimmer, bass slowly fades in]
Close your eyes...
Pick a name.
Pick a face.
There's another life waiting
just behind the login page.
Verse 1
There was a castle in a browser,
there was moonlight on the screen,
you could walk into a kingdom
and become someone the world's never seen.
Velvet vampires after midnight,
queens with diamonds in their hair,
every doorway was another world
and somebody waited there.
No passports, no permission,
just a picture and a name—
by the time the morning found us,
we were never quite the same.
Pre-Chorus
Time moved different after midnight,
years could fit inside one night.
Come a little closer, darling—
step across the line.
Chorus
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
spin me through a hundred lives.
I can be a king by midnight,
I can be a queen by five.
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
hear them calling through the glow—
You can be anything you dreamed...
All you have to do
is go.
Oh-oh, virtual worlds...
Oh-oh, take me home...
Verse 2
We painted rooms with other places,
made a webpage into Rome,
put our avatars upon it
and somehow made the pixels home.
There were families made of strangers,
wars that lasted half a year,
weddings underneath fake starlight
that somehow left us real tears.
You could die and start tomorrow,
wear another crown by ten.
Live a lifetime in an evening...
then log in
and live again.
Pre-Chorus
Maybe none of it was solid.
Maybe all of it was true.
Because somewhere in those borrowed worlds
I found pieces of me too.
Chorus
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
spin me through a hundred lives.
I can be a god by midnight,
I can fall and still survive.
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
hear them calling through the glow—
You can be anything you dreamed...
All you have to do
is go.
Oh-oh, virtual worlds...
Oh-oh, take me home...
[Bass gets funky, strings stab on the beat]
Click—
new room.
New dress.
New name.
New rules.
New throne.
Same game.
Knight at seven,
witch at nine,
immortal by a quarter past time.
Fall in love,
declare a war,
lose your crown,
then build one more.
Real world says
you only get one—
Virtual says:
Baby, why stop at one?
Dance Hook
One life!
(Never enough!)
One world!
(Never enough!)
Give me another,
another, another—
TURN IT UP!
Bridge
[Beat drops to dreamy synth pads and disco strings]
And sometimes...
years later...
you hear an old name
and suddenly you're seventeen again.
The castle loads.
The music plays.
Someone you thought you'd forgotten
is sitting in their place.
Final Chorus
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
spin me through a hundred lives.
Every version that I dreamed of
still remembers how to shine.
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
I can hear that old refrain—
You can be anything you dreamed...
So I log in
once again.
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds,
where a lifetime fits inside
Virtual worlds, virtual worlds—
real or not,
I know this much:
Every world I ever lived in
left a little piece
of us.
Outro
[Disco beat fading, female vocal layered like a memory]
Oh-oh... virtual worlds...
(Be anything...)
Oh-oh... virtual worlds...
(Live anything...)
